The shortage of healthcare workers in Michigan has state lawmakers looking for ways to help.
Governor Whitmer will consider Legislation that is aimed to lighten the load for healthcare workers by calling in support from those outside of Michigan. They would be workers who are already licensed in other states but don’t have a Michigan license.
The Michigan Health and Hospital Association says, "The situation facing hospitals and health systems across the state is dire." There are staff shortages and many facilities are experiencing vacancy rates of 20% or more of their workforce.
Also a bill, already approved by the Michigan House, would allocate $300 million for health care facilities to recruit and retain employees in Michigan.
That legislation is expected to be taken up for another vote in the new year, when lawmakers return for session from their holiday break.
