Chief Justice John Roberts says the memo was a draft and not a decision. Leaking of memo seen as critical disruption of integrity of court decision-making.
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts confirmed the existence of a leaked draft memo concerning abortion but says that action was more about the violation of the court integrity.
Roberts says leaking of this memo was intended to undermine confidence in the high court and will not succeed.
The memo was tied to a Missouri case in which lawmakers were attempting a ban on certain abortions. Lawmakers there wanted to ban abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Any passage is currently on hold while the court makes their determination, a decision is expected later this summer.
Roberts says the memo was a draft and does not represent any decision by the court. He calls the release of the memo “egregious,” and says an investigation is now underway as to how it was released.
