Rescue crews were called to Lake Michigan Monday afternoon after two swimmers started to struggle in the waves and under-currents.
(SOUTH HAVEN, Mich.) - The flags at the beach in South Haven were Yellow and then switched to Red as the wind increased and waves got bigger Monday afternoon.
Two swimmers in the water began to struggle just off South Beach and bystanders were able to help bring the two swimmers back to shore. Both were unresponsive as emergency crews arrived. The two were taken to the hospital but both lost their lives.
The victims were identified as a 22-year-old man from Novi and a 21-year-old woman from Columbus.
Authorities say there have been over 30 drownings in Lake Michigan this year.
Swimmers are urged to keep an eye on what colored flags are being flown. Many from out of the area, are now familiar with the strong under currents caused by the large waves. Red Flags mean dangerous conditions, don't swim. Double Red Flags mean the beaches are closed.
