8/4/22 - GRPS Drops Uniforms as Part of Dress Code

The District says its an effort to give students more freedom of choice, while at the same time keeping certain images out of the district.

Grand Rapids public schools announced they will no longer enact a uniform requirement in the dress code at public schools. 

The board voted back on August 1st, to drop that part of the code saying they wanted students to have the freedom to express themselves without interfering with educational goals.  The district says while the uniform part of the policy is being eliminated for the upcoming year, there are still going to be rules in place to help students dress for success.

For example, scholars must be dressed appropriately for the school setting, no undergarments, midriff, or cleavage should be showing. Head coverings are allowed for religious or medical purposes only.

Clothing cannot display logos that promote drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gangs, racism, sexism, or any type of prejudice.
