It's the first official day of Summer and much of the nation will be under a Heat Advisory.
It was just after 5 a.m. this morning that Summer officially began, marking the 2022 summer solstice. This is the precise moment when the North Pole tilts closest to the sun, making the sun appear at its highest point in the sky of the year.
In the Northern Hemisphere, meteorological summer began June 1, and astronomical summer begins June 21. That is the date of the summer solstice, or the day with the longest daylight hours of the year.
From there, there will be fewer and fewer daylight hours every day, until the winter solstice Dec. 21, when daylight hours begin to slowly increase again.
July is typically the hottest month of the year in many locations. However today we can expect sweltering record-breaking heat across much of the country.
Many cities could face triple-digit temperatures and extreme heat and humidity.
In West Michigan "Heat Advisories" have been issued and today is an "Air Quality Alert" day.
