8/11/21 - Mel Trotter Aids During Excessive Heat in West MI

Homeless in Grand Rapids area suffer when temps reach 90's with high humidity. Mel Trotter Ministries is looking to alleviate some of that suffering.

As temperatures sore into the 90's across West Michigan there are those who will suffer more than others.

Among those are the homeless population of Grand Rapids.  Hundreds will be looking for some relief under the conditions that also include high humidity.

Adrienne Goodstal with Mel Trotter Ministries in Grand Rapids, says high heat affects everyone, and more so on those who are un-sheltered.

"The heat has such a great impact on people that are experiencing homelessness or are outside.  It's just really important for us to make sure that we're providing a safe place for people to go and get out of the elements."

Goodstal says assistance includes providing water bottles, cooling packs, sunscreen, even rides to cooling centers at the ministry and around the area.  The simple act of providing that cool drink of water not only offers physical relief, but it can also lead to a spiritual one.

"We do everything through the compassion of Christ and see people for who they are; made in the image of God.  And if somebody needs a drink of water and we can provide this, then that's what we're doing.  But out of that, we hope that builds relationships."

Those relationships build opportunities to share more of the love of Christ.
