Gas prices have jumped to almost $4 a gallon in West Michigan.
- The cost for filling a gas tank has gone up in the last week. Gas prices are up at least 10 cents a gallon in Michigan.
Gas price experts say the spike in price comes amid a lull in demand, a routine price cycle and because of refinery issues at a facility in Illinois.
Severe weather impacted an Exxon-Mobil refinery in Joliet, Illinois, which supplies the area with millions of gallons of fuel. As the refinery remains out of commission, Michiganders are paying more at the pump.
It will most likely take a couple weeks for prices to begin dropping.
In the Grand Rapids area, gas stations are charging around $3.99 a gallon. The average price for a gallon of gas nationally, is around $3.50.
