President Joe Biden released a letter on social media Sunday afternoon and said he plans to drop his re-election campaign for President.
-President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race following pressure from fellow Democrats to end his bid for reelection.
President Biden, 81, announced on social media on Sunday that he will no longer seek another four years in office. By all accounts, the president intends to finish out the remainder of his term in office.
President Biden wrote in a letter posted to his official account on X: “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
The President said he would address the nation later in the week about his decision. He has been in isolation at his home in Delaware after testing positive for COVID.
A short time after the announcement was made that he does not plan to run for reelection he endorsed Vice President Harris to be the party’s nominee in November. Media outlets are reporting that Vice President Harris’ presidential campaign has raised nearly $50 million in grassroots donations since President Biden suspended his re-election bid and endorsed her,
The Democratic National Convention is four weeks away and gets underway August 19 in Chicago.
