The average 4th of July cookout will cost an extra $10 from last year's prices.

No surprise here but it will cost more for this year’s backyard 4th of July BBQ.

The American Farm Bureau estimates costs are up 17% over last year for a meal of burgers, grilled hot dogs and chicken, as well as all the sides and deserts.  The average meal will be about 10 dollars more this year over last.  The average meal for 10 people will run around $69.68, which is still below seven dollars a person.  However, costs for the previous two years were holding steady at just over $59.50 for years 2020 and 2021.

Despite the higher costs, more farmers are not seeing the money go back to them.  Instead, more of the costs are being incurred in the systems that produce and transport the foods to market, without those profits being shared with farmers.

Supply issues and the war in Ukraine are impacting prices but higher fuel costs for transportation are also affecting delivery systems.
