6/17/24 - Cooling Centers Provide Relief From The Heat

Much of West Michigan will be impacted by high temperatures and a heat index of around 100 this week. Many communities have cooling centers available for those who don't have air conditioning.

GRAND RAPIDS

OTTAWA COUNTY

The county urged anyone in need of overnight shelter to contact Gateway Mission in Holland.

 

KALAMAZOO AND PORTAGE

  • Ministry with Community at 500 N. Edwards St.: 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. all week
  • Kalamazoo Gospel Mission at 448 N. Burdick St.: Open in afternoons, but will open sooner if temperatures reach the 90s
  • Kalamazoo Central Library at 315 S. Rose St.: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday
  • Comstock Community Center at 6330 King Highway, Comstock: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday

In Portage, the Portage Zhang Senior Center, located at 203 East Centre Ave, will be open Monday until 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. The city said the center will have plenty of seating and water available. Additional dates are being considered.

 

Those in need can also call 211 to find shelter and other resources.
