New laws in Michigan will ensure high school coaches have proper certification for CPR and can use defibrillators.

DETROIT --Gov. Whitmer signed two bills on Saturday that are meant to better protect student-athletes.

The bills ensure all high school coaches have proper certification for CPR and use for automated external defibrillators.

Saturday’s legislation also guarantees schools have a cardiac emergency response plan.

Governor Whitmer signed the new bills in Detroit, with the NFL Draft as the backdrop.

According to data provided by officials, the American Heart Association says that nearly seven in ten children survive cardiac arrest in schools with AEDS, which is higher than the overall average survival rate.
