4/11/22 - Police Chief Says Shooting Video To Be Released This Week

A protest in Grand Rapids called for public release of police video.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Hundreds of people joined a protest march in Grand Rapids on Saturday.

They marched to the Center for Community Transformation, where a candlelight vigil was held.

Family members of Patrick Lyoya called for public release of a video from the deadly confrontation he had with police last week.

The shooting occurred on April 4, when an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with a license plate that was not registered to it. A fight ensued, police said, that ended when the officer fired his weapon and killed Lyoya.

Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker asked police not to release any evidence, including footage, until the investigation is complete.

Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said he intends to release the video by the end of this week.
