12/6/23 - New Local Housing Shelter & Senior Center Cut The Ribbon

Local groups cut the ribbon on new facilities meant to help the homeless and support seniors in the Grand Rapids area.

-A new Wyoming Park Family Housing Shelter has been opened up and is located inside the Wyoming Park United Methodist Church off Porter Street.  

The 12 units will be able to help support families in need of temporary housing and a place they can stay that is safe.  The shelter should be able to help more than 60 area families each year. 

Families are expected to begin moving into the new shelter after the first of the new year. 

 

-On Tuesday, the ribbon was cut for a Senior Neighbors Center in Walker. It is located at the Fire Station, 1470 3 Mile Road NW. 

The Center will provide a place for those 60 and older to gather for entertainment and share a meal.

Every year, over 5,000 older adults receive services through Senior Neighbors which helps many of them stay independent through a wide range of essential services.  The well-being of older adults is targeted with services that promote self-sufficiency, especially to those with physical, social or economic needs living in Kent County. 

A bus stop is located just outside and will provide an easy drop off.

The Senior Cener will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
