A number of airlines canceled flights because of bad weather and that left travelers stranded. Many airlines are still trying to catch up.
-The death toll from the Christmas weekend storm rose to at least 57. The storm claimed at least 28 lives in western New York. That area was hit with around 4 feet of snow.
Weather-related flight cancellations and delays snarled commercial air traffic over the Christmas weekend. Southwest Airlines accounted for the bulk of the disruptions.
More than 3,900 U.S. airline flights were cancelled Monday, including 2,800 operated by Southwest. As of late Monday, they had already canceled 61% of their Tuesday flights and 30% of Wednesday's flights.
Southwest called the situation unacceptable and apologized.
The U.S. Department of Transportation said it was "concerned" by the high number of cancellations and reports of lacking customer service and said they would examine whether the cancellations were controllable.
