The federal government will provide thousands of dollars to help state and local organizations fight gun crime and serious violence.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Department of Justice has awarded $192,976 to support the Project Safe Neighborhoods Program in the Western district of Michigan.
Funding will go to support community efforts to address the increase of gun crimes and serious violence in the district.
The grant is one of a number of awards being made to state and local agencies across the country.
U.S. Attorney Mark Totten says that addressing violence requires cooperation between law enforcement and community members as they address the underlying causes of violence before it occurs.
The Project Safe Neighborhoods Program puts emphasis on community engagement, prevention, and intervention measures, focused and strategic enforcement, and measurement and accountability to achieve an overall reduction in violent crime.
The Office of Justice Programs provide assistance and resources to improve the nation's capacity to prevent and reduce crime. More information is available at: www.ojp.gov.
